About the Text Diff Tool

This tool compares two versions of text and highlights exactly what changed — which words were added, which were removed, and what stayed the same. Unlike a line-based code diff, it can work at the word level, so it's ideal for prose: essays, articles, documentation, contracts, and any writing where changes happen inside sentences rather than whole lines.

Paste an original and a revised version to see a clear, color-coded picture of the edits, plus a count of additions and deletions. Everything runs in your browser, so private documents stay on your device.

Words, sentences and lines

A line diff marks an entire line as changed if anything in it differs — perfect for code, where lines are the unit of change. A word diff pinpoints the exact words that changed within a line, which is far more readable for prose where one word in a long paragraph was edited. Sentence mode sits in between: it shows which sentences were rewritten, which is the clearest view when a draft has been heavily edited. For code and config, use the line-based Diff Viewer.

Common uses

  • Reviewing edits between two drafts of an article or essay.
  • Checking what a collaborator changed in a document.
  • Comparing two versions of terms, a contract, or a policy.
  • Spotting subtle differences between similar-looking text snippets.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste the original text on one side.
  2. 2Paste the revised text on the other.
  3. 3Choose Words or Sentences, and Track changes or Side by side.
  4. 4Review the highlighted edits and the numbered list of changes, or copy the redline as Markdown or HTML.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and the Diff Viewer?

Text Diff compares words or sentences and is built for writing. The Diff Viewer compares line by line with line numbers and .patch export, which suits code and structured data.

Can I compare two paragraphs of writing?

Yes. Word-level diff is designed for exactly that, highlighting the specific words that were added or removed within each sentence.

Does it show how many changes were made?

Yes. It reports a similarity percentage, the words added and removed, and a numbered list of every change with the words just before it for context.

Will re-wrapped lines show up as changes?

Not by default. “Ignore line breaks & spacing” treats a paragraph that was re-wrapped or has extra spaces as unchanged. You can also ignore case and punctuation.

Can I share the result?

Copy as Markdown gives ~~deleted~~ and **inserted** text for GitHub, Slack or Notion; Copy as HTML gives <del> and <ins> markup for email or a CMS.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so even confidential documents stay private.
