About the Background Remover
This background remover uses a small AI model that runs inside your browser. Drop in a photo and it finds the subject — a person, a pet or a product — and removes everything behind it, leaving a transparent PNG ready for a website, a slide, a sticker or a product listing.
Most background removers upload your photo to a server. This one does not: the model downloads to your browser once (a few megabytes), and every image is processed on your own device. That keeps private photos private and means there are no credits, watermarks or size limits.
People or products: which should I pick?
People & pets uses MODNet, a model trained on portraits, so it keeps hair and outlines soft and natural. Products & objects uses U²-Net, which looks for the main object in the picture — good for items on a table, logos and things. If the first result misses part of the subject, switch to the other one; it takes a second.
Getting clean edges
Move Soft ↔ Sharp to the right for crisp outlines on products and graphics, or keep it at 0 for soft hair and fur. Keep more ↔ Trim more moves the edge inwards to remove a leftover halo, or outwards when the cut-out is too tight. The best results come from photos where the subject stands out clearly from the background.
Is the AI model safe to download?
The model files are served from elefcode itself, not from a third party, and they are only data — the numbers of a neural network — run by ONNX Runtime Web in a sandboxed Web Worker. Both models are open source under the Apache 2.0 licence. You can remove the downloaded copy at any time with Delete downloaded models.
How to use it
- 1Pick People & pets or Products & objects.
- 2Drop in, paste or choose a photo — the background is removed automatically.
- 3Keep it transparent, or choose a colour or blurred background, and adjust the edges if needed.
- 4Download a PNG, WebP or JPG, or copy it to the clipboard.
Frequently asked questions
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There are no credits, sign-ups, watermarks or resolution limits, because the AI runs on your device instead of on a paid server.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The image never leaves your browser. Only the AI model is downloaded, once, from this site.
Why does the first use take longer?
The first time, the browser downloads the AI model (about 5–7 MB). It is saved in the browser, so after that the tool starts quickly and even works offline.
How do I get a transparent PNG?
Leave the background set to None and download as PNG (or WebP). JPG cannot store transparency, so it is only offered with a colour or blurred background.
The result cut off part of my subject. What can I do?
Try the other subject type, or drag Keep more ↔ Trim more to the left. Photos with clear contrast between subject and background give the best results.
Does it keep the original resolution?
Yes. The model works on a smaller copy to find the outline, and the mask is then scaled up and applied to your full-size image.
