Text to Speech in the Browser: How It Works

Every modern browser can read text aloud through the Web Speech API — no server or account needed. It is useful for proofreading, accessibility, language learning, and quick voice-overs.

How it works

A page creates a SpeechSynthesisUtterance with the text, chooses a voice, rate, and pitch, and passes it to speechSynthesis.speak(). The voices come from your operating system and browser, so the same page sounds different on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Choosing a voice

Pick a voice that matches the language of the text — an English voice reading French sounds wrong. Some browsers offer higher-quality online voices alongside local ones; local voices work offline.

Better-sounding speech

Punctuation controls pauses, so add commas and full stops where a speaker would breathe. Spell out abbreviations and unusual numbers that the voice might misread, and slow the rate slightly for long passages.
